Origins of the name

The name Sossano has an ancient and fascinating history. According to the historian Francesco Barbarano de' Mironi, the name derives from "healthy sky", that is, a place where the air is healthy and the fog stops shortly at the foot of the mountains. However, the suffix -anus indicates a land property granted to Roman veteran soldiers, and it is likely that the name derives from "Celsio's property."

The geographic conformation of Sossano has favored human settlements since ancient times. On the ridge of Mount Croce, artifacts have been found from a settlement from the Bronze Age and the first and second Atestino period.
