The origins of the name Sagron Mis
The name Sagron may derive from "sa" (on) and "(a)grón," which may in turn come from "acer," "aceris" (maple) or "acris" (sharp). Mis, on the other hand, takes its name from the homonymous watercourse, of probable pre-Latin origin.
The history of Sagron Mis
The history of human settlement in Sagron Mis dates back to the sixteenth century, when the area was completely covered by forests that were cut down by charcoal burners. The large pastures obtained allowed the formation of agricultural farms and some scattered residential nuclei.
At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the first church was built in the fraction of Marcoi, along with the church of Tiser in the valley floor, in the Municipality of Gosaldo (BL).
Later, extractive activities were added to the agricultural ones, obtained thanks to the mines of gold, mercury, sulfur, and cinnabar, but the area's development was hindered by isolation and inconvenient communication routes.
In the nineteenth century, the depressed agricultural economy and the depletion of the mines forced many inhabitants to emigrate to France and the Americas. The main activity exported by emigrants was chair craftsmanship, and its workers, in dialect "careghete," were able to communicate with each other through a language of their invention, also known to the cabinetmakers of Gosaldo: the "scabelament del contha."
