Origins of the name
The name Sospirolo derives from the homonymous Monte Sperone, which overlooks the town. In particular, the word Sospirolo means "under the Sperone". The suffix "-oi" present in the Venetian version of the name, instead, indicates the inhabitants of the hamlets located under the mountain.
History
Sospirolo has ancient origins, dating back to the Roman era. During the Middle Ages, the town experienced a period of development thanks to the presence of the Claudia Augusta road, an important communication route between Italy and the provinces of the Roman Empire. Over the centuries, Sospirolo experienced various events, including the French invasion, the border crossing between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austrian Empire, and World War II.

Venetian Villas
The municipal territory is home to numerous Venetian villas, a testament to the area's noble past. Among the most important are Villa Sandi Zasso, located in the Moldoi di Maras area (18th century), Villa Buzzatti Ferrante in Gron (19th century), Villa Agosti Bacchetti in Belvedere di Gron (17th century), and Villa Agosti, Miari in Susin (18th century). The latter is famous for its valuable park.
Certosa di Vedana
In the San Gottardo area, near the Cordevole, stands the Certosa di Vedana. The institution has a centuries-old history and is now run by the nuns of the Certosino Order. It is a place of peace and spirituality, immersed in a charming natural environment.
Mis Valley
The Mis Valley is a suggestive valley inside the Belluno Dolomites National Park. Here you can admire breathtaking landscapes, walk among flowering meadows and ancient forests, discover waterfalls and mountain lakes.

Sospirolo is twinned with several countries around the world, including Martinsried in Germany, Gignod in Valle d'Aosta, and Soverzene in the province of Belluno.
