Sospiro

Sospiro: a common agricultural town in Lombardy

Hello friends, today I want to tell you about Sospiro, an Italian town located in the province of Cremona, in the region of Lombardy. With its 3,046 inhabitants, Sospiro is a predominantly agricultural town, and if you are passionate about the agricultural sector, you will surely find yourself in your element. The toponym Sospiro derives from the Latin 'sex pilae', which means six milestones, the distance that separates the town from the capital Cremona.

Society

Demographic evolution

The town of Sospiro has an interesting history from a demographic point of view. In 1861, it had only 2,305 inhabitants, but over the course of the 20th century, the population grew steadily. In fact, in 1971 it was 3,371 inhabitants, and finally in 2011, 3,046.

Monuments and places of interest

There are some very interesting places to visit in Sospiro, including the Church of San Siro, located right in the center of the town. The church dates back to the 13th century and features a facade built in Romanesque style, with an imposing bell tower. Inside, you can admire some frescoes and paintings that date back to past centuries.

Administration

The administration of the town is entrusted to the mayor and the city council, which meets regularly to make important decisions for the town.

Infrastructure and transport

Sospiro is easily accessible by car, but there are also other transportation options available. From 1888 to 1954, the town was served by two stops on the Cremona-Casalmaggiore tramway. In addition, there was also a station of the same located in Longardore; this infrastructure was managed lastly by the company Tramvie Provinciali Cremonesi.

Istituto Ospedaliero di Sospiro Foundation

In Sospiro, there is a very important foundation called the Istituto Ospedaliero di Sospiro. It is one of the largest multiservice companies in the Lombardy region for the care and assistance of disabled and elderly people. Sospiro is therefore jokingly called "The Village of the Insane" due to the large number of patients assisted by the foundation. In 2005, the foundation renovated a large hotel in Toscolano Maderno on Lake Garda with the project of using it for its patients, and the structure has recently entered into service.

Notes

To learn more about the history of Sospiro, P. Ghidotti's book entitled "La campagna cremonese in età romana", published in Vercelli in 1994, could be a good read.
