The physical geography of Sorgà

Sorgà is located just 28 kilometers from the city of Verona, located in the southwest area of the province. One of the main features of the territory is the Tione river, which runs through it from beginning to end, then flowing into the Tartaro in Gazzo Veronese. This makes Sorgà a place with an agricultural and rice-growing vocation, where many festivals are dedicated to the famous risotto.

The territory of Sorgà

The municipality of Sorgà is composed of several villages, including Pontepossero, Bonferraro, Pampuro, and the locality of Moratica. It borders to the north with Erbé, to the east with Erbé and Nogara, to the south with Nogara, Gazzo Veronese, and Villimpenta, and to the west with Castel d'Ario, Bigarello, and Castel Belforte. The territory is rich in villas and courtyards, demonstrating the historical importance of the city of Sorgà. In addition, the name Sorgà derives from the cultivation of sorghum that once characterized this area.

History of Sorgà

The territory of the current Municipality of Sorgà has a long history, as evidenced by the different names used over the years. During the dominion of the Republic of Venice, the villages of Sorgà, Pontepossero, Bonferraro, and Moratica had their own political and administrative configuration. Only after the Napoleonic cadastral survey of 1813 did these locations come together in the Municipality of Sorgà.

The vicariate of Pontepossero

The vicariate of Pontepossero has a very interesting history, which saw the knight and leader Taddeo Dal Verme cede the fiefdom and castle of Pontepossero, along with jurisdiction, duties, and tithe, to Venetian patrician Nicolò Grimani. This happened in 1411 and contributed to shaping the territorial structure of the current Municipality of Sorgà.

In general, Sorgà is a city with an important historical heritage, characterized by the beauty of nature and the architecture of historical villas and courtyards. For these reasons, we invite you to come and visit Sorgà and enjoy all its beauties!
