Sorbo San Basile
Hi everyone, today I will talk to you about Sorbo San Basile, a municipality in the province of Catanzaro in Calabria, affectionately called ''U Sòrvu'' in Calabrian dialect. With its 789 inhabitants and located at an altitude of 620 meters on the eastern slopes of Sila Piccola, to the right of the Alli river, it is a small village with great charm.
History
Let's go back in time to learn a bit about the history of Sorbo San Basile. Its foundation dates back to the Bruzi period, but it was destroyed by the Romans during the Punic Wars and was only rebuilt in the 9th century. In the Middle Ages, the village became a fiefdom of the Sanseverino and Filangieri families, and in 1806 it was made a municipality. During the 19th century, important industrial activities arose, leading to a considerable expansion of the municipality.
Symbols
The municipal coat of arms and flag of Sorbo San Basile are very interesting and have their own story. They were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on March 15, 2018. The coat of arms is divided into two parts, the first depicting the hills of Sila Piccola and the Alli river, the second is the symbol of the city of Catanzaro. The flag has a blue background, colors that recall the sky of Sorbo San Basile and the sea not far away.
Society
Sorbo San Basile has had a particular demographic evolution. In 1861 it had only 362 inhabitants, while in the 1950s it reached its historical peak with almost 5000 inhabitants. In recent decades, however, the population has decreased, reaching today's 789 inhabitants.
