Sora

Hi everyone! Today I want to talk to you about the city of Sora, an Italian municipality located in the province of Frosinone in Lazio. This city has a very ancient history, dating back to the Middle Paleolithic period, and has undergone various dominations over time.

Physical Geography

Territory and urbanization

Located at about 300 m above sea level, Sora is located at the gates of the Central Apennines, on the border between Lazio and Abruzzo, in the Liri Valley. The inhabited center extends along the plain of the Liri, at the foot of Mount San Casto, and borders the municipality of Isola del Liri, crossed by the Fibreno river.

In the 1950s, the city underwent a considerable building development and grew mainly along the main arteries that connect it to the surrounding area. However, this disorderly development broke with the regulatory plan imposed in the 1920s and 1930s after the Marsica earthquake of 1915, which provided for an orderly distribution of the city.

Origin of the name

The name Sora has an uncertain origin, but it seems to derive from the Latin word "Soranus", which means "of Sora", or it may have Indo-European roots and refer to the words "sor" (rock) and "water". However, the name has remained unchanged over the centuries.

Sora was a city of the Volsci, then occupied by the Samnites and conquered by the Romans in 326 BC. In Roman times, Sora became a Latin colony and a municipality, and then fell under the dominion of the Byzantine Empire, the Lombards, the Normans, and the Angevins.

In the territory of Sora, numerous archaeological finds have been found dating back to the Volscian period, such as the polygonal walls dating back to the 6th-4th century BC. On Mount San Casto and Cassio, there are also the remains of a Roman settlement.

During the Middle Ages, Sora had a role of great strategic importance and was the scene of numerous battles. In the Renaissance, the city was an important cultural and artistic center thanks to the presence of illustrious figures such as Ludovico Ariosto.
