Rino

Welcome to Rino: A Welcoming Village in the Heart of Val Camonica

Rino is a small but picturesque village situated in the heart of Val Camonica, in the province of Brescia. This communal village is the closest to the town of Sonico and is populated by numerous inhabitants. The village is divided into two distinct parts: Rino Bassa and Rino Alta, while the characteristic area of Dane is characterized by fields and surrounded by lush forests. The oldest part of the village was located in the strip of land between the two rivers, Remulo and Rabbia. Rino was originally called 'Re', like the river that flowed near the village, while its current name refers to the Remulo River.

History of Rino

Rino has an ancient and fascinating history. In 1639, it became a parish and separated from Sonico. During the time of the Vicinia, the Antichi Originari were the heads of the local families who could only deliberate in the councils, while nobles, clergy, and foreigners had no voice. Local records list the surnames of the originari of Rino, including Caldinelli, Casarotti, Gasparini, Madeo, Molinari, Mottinelli, Piccinelli, and Scancietti.

Monuments and Places of Interest

The village of Rino was built around its two churches of great interest. One of these churches is the Parish Church of S. Antonio Abate, dating back to the 18th century, and features a classic baroque style with typically alpine influences. The granite bell tower dates back to 1600, while the marble portal bears the date of 1750. Inside the church is the great altarpiece by the artist Corbellini dating back to 1700. Three important paintings by Giacomo Ceruti, known as the Pitocchetto, adorn the walls of the church. One of these paintings, depicting the Madonna with the Child and St. Joseph, was the first altarpiece. The painting on the right side of the altar depicts the Holy Sacrament, while the other altarpiece placed on the back wall above the entrance door represents the Madonna of the Rosary with St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena, and around them are painted the 15 mysteries of the Rosary. Four frescoes have been attributed to Giacomo Ceruti and are displayed on the vaulted ceiling of the nave and presbytery.
