Hi everyone! In this text we will talk about Sommariva Perno, an Italian town in the province of Cuneo, in Piedmont. With its 2710 inhabitants, it is part of the Roero area. Let's discover some curiosities about this fascinating place together.

Origin of the name

The name Sommariva comes from the Latin "Summaripae" which means "place of donkeys" or "resting place of mules". Despite this, the Piedmontese town is also known by its name in the Piedmontese language "Somariva-l'Àuta".

History

Sommariva Perno was an important city thanks to its strategic position at the crossroads of important roads. During its history, the Piedmontese town came under the control of cities such as Alba and Asti. Around the center of the town, on the main roads, there were four other villages of which, nowadays, nothing remains. However, the church of the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Tavoletto remains as evidence of the ancient settlement of Thevoletum.

In the 14th and 15th centuries, Sommariva Perno became a free town. After alternating events that saw the town pass from the Savoy to the municipalities of Asti and Alba, in 1621 the Marquis Conreno Roero left the town of Sommariva to the Savoy in his will.

But the real story of the town revolves around its castle, purchased by Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy to host Countess Rosa Vercellana, also known as the Rosa Vercellana. The countess arrived in 1859 and the castle became an austere 19th century palace. In this building, important pages of Italian Risorgimento were written and it is in Sommariva Perno that the original text, dated 1859, of King Vittorio Emanuele II's speech with the famous "Cry of Pain" is preserved.
