Solonghello is an Italian town located in the province of Alessandria, in Piemonte. With a population of only 214 inhabitants, Solonghello is a quiet and picturesque village. The name of the town has Germanic origins and could derive from the proper name "Swal", combined with the suffix "ing" which indicates belonging, and with the diminutive "elus", obtaining the interpretation of "small territory belonging to a leader named Swala".

A brief history of Solonghello

The first information regarding Solonghello dates back to 1016, when a group of families rebelled against the church of Vercelli and united under the name of Soalingellum. The history of the town was influenced by the struggles for the domination of the Monferrato territory, suffering the abuses of the French and Spanish until becoming part of the Savoy Duchy in 1713 with the Treaty of Utrecht.

Symbols of the town

The coat of arms and the banner of the town of Solonghello were granted in December 2010 by the President of the Republic. The banner is a white panel.

The castle

The ancient fortress was built in the twelfth century by a vassal of the Marquis of Monferrato. It passed through different families of owners, including the De Catena - De Gabiano, the Rivetta, the Della Sala, the Pezzana, the Corsino, the Scarampi, the Calvi di Bergolo and finally the Crova family, the current owner. The castle suffered damage and looting during the wars of past centuries.

The town has undergone a strong depopulation, leading to a 75% reduction in population compared to 1921.
