Solarussa

Solarussa: a town in Sardinia

Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about the small town of Solarussa. It is located in the province of Oristano in Sardinia and is home to about 2300 people. Solarussa's territory is hilly and the Tirso river, the largest on the island, flows not far from the town, leaving highly fertile deposits for agriculture. The main inhabited center is located in the plain of Campidano, but the municipality also includes the hamlet of Pardu Nou, a few kilometers away.

The territory of Solarussa

The area of the municipality of Solarussa is 31.89 km² and is included between the Abbasanta Plateau and the Campidano plain of Oristano. The highest part of the municipal territory is 172 meters above sea level and the lowest part is only 12 meters above sea level. Solarussa's climate is temperate, with cold winters and hot summers influenced by the proximity to the sea. Precipitation is scarce and concentrated mainly in autumn and spring.

Solarussa: discovering a small Sardinian treasure

The origin of the name Solarussa

The name Solarussa has Latin origins and could derive from "solum russus" or "russeus", which means "red or reddish soil". The name in fact refers to the color of the soil in the area, which is very fertile thanks to the deposits left by the Tirso river. However, according to a second theory supported by some Sardinian linguists, the name derives from a pre-Roman appellation which means "very rocky hill".

What to do in Solarussa

Solarussa is a small municipality, but offers different activities and places to visit. The church of San Pietro Apostolo is a beautiful neoclassical-style church located in the center of the town and is definitely worth a visit. Additionally, the hamlet of Pardu Nou is the perfect place for an outdoor walk. It is surrounded by the calm of the Sardinian countryside and is an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature.

Conclusions

In short, if you are looking for a small, peaceful town where you can spend a few days away from the chaos of the city, Solarussa is definitely a destination to consider. It offers the opportunity to discover the beauty and tranquility of the Sardinian countryside, as well as the possibility to admire the architectural and cultural beauties of the town. I hope that my brief guide has been helpful and that you can soon visit Solarussa.
