Solaro

Solaro: a town near Milan

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Solaro, a town located about 19 km north of Milan, in the Lombardy region.

History

Solaro has had an interesting history, alternating between periods of autonomy and annexation to other towns. In 1809, the municipality of Solaro was abolished and annexed to that of Ceriano, but soon the Austrians reinstated municipal autonomy. In 1869, a Royal Decree reinstated the annexation to Ceriano, but there was again a restoration of autonomy in 1919.

Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Solaro is divided into two parts. In the left field, on a red background, there is a silver bisant that recalls the coat of arms of the Milanese family of Carcassola, who were feudal lords of Seveso. In the right field, on a blue background, there is a sun, in reference to the ancient name of the town, Solarium.

There are several churches, including the parish church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta, the Oratory of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament (built in the 1960s), the Church of Madonna di San Pietro, the Oratory of Saints Ambrogio and Caterina, and the Chapel of Santa Maria dei Lavoratori.

Civil architecture

The Villa Borromeo D'Adda is certainly one of the most important architectures in the town. It was commissioned in 1854 by Countess Marie Leopoldine von Khevenhüller-Metsch, widow of Marquis Febo D'Adda, and is now the seat of the municipality. The Palazzo Biraghi is another valuable architecture, dating back to the 14th century and an example of Romanesque architecture.
