Solagna

Welcome to Solagna

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Solagna, a beautiful municipality in the province of Vicenza, in Veneto. With its 1,807 inhabitants, this location is located at the mouth of the Brenta Canal on the left side of the river. Solagna is surrounded by many other municipalities, such as Pove del Grappa, San Nazario, Campese, and Campolongo sul Brenta. The municipal territory is very peculiar and extends through the steep ridges that dominate the country. The highest part of Solagna is represented by the Colli Alti, a meadow and wooded plateau that reaches the summit of Mount Asolone, which rises to 1520 m., the highest altitude in the area.

Origin of the name

Solagna is an ancient place name that has many hypotheses about its origin. The first mention of the name dates back to 917 and since then it has always been very important for the region. Some claim that the name derives from "sole", but it cannot be certain as the location is not in a sunny position. Others argue that the name has Latin roots, in 'Solanius'. A popular story instead claims that the mythical Antenor founded the city in honor of the nymph Sola.

Solagna: history, beauty, and traditions in the heart of Veneto.

The history of Solagna

The history of Solagna is very ancient and is linked to the foundation of the church of Santa Giustina, which made it an important transit location. It dates back to this period, the construction of the first fortifications, necessary to protect the territory from the Hungarians. It is believed that during that period the castle of Solagna was erected, of which there is evidence from 1189 onwards. The Fortress was located near the church, inside the city walls, and next to the so-called "big palace" of the Ezzelini family, which was the seat of their curia. The castle was dismantled in 1625, while the "big palace" survived until the second half of the XIX century.

The territory of Solagna remained under the influence of Padua until the end of the XII century. Later, it came under the dominion of the Ezzelini family, who wanted the construction of a tower to defend themselves from aggressions. Shortly after, the whole territory became Paduan territory, but the contrasts between the city of Padua and that of Vicenza led to disputes over the territory, which was later conquered by the Serenissima Republic of Venice, which imposed its dominion.
