Sogliano Cavour
Welcome to Sogliano Cavour, a Puglian town full of history and traditions!
We welcome you to the town of Sogliano Cavour, a small but charming Puglian city located in the hinterland of the Salento peninsula, between the Ionian and Adriatic seas. Together with Cutrofiano, Cursi, Cannole, and other towns in the Grecìa Salentina, it is one of the thirteen villages of Terra d'Otranto that preserve the Greek language and traditions.
Physical Geography
Sogliano Cavour is located 75 meters above sea level and the municipal territory extends for 5.17 km² in the central part of the province of Lecce. Our territory is mainly flat but also presents typical elements of the karst phenomenon, such as the sinkhole located east of the settlement.
Climate
The climate of Sogliano Cavour is typically Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot and humid summers. Temperatures range from 9°C in January to 25.1°C in August, while the average annual rainfall is about 676mm. The towns of the lower Salento weakly feel the western currents, thanks to the protection of the Salento hills, but they enjoy good windiness from the southeast autumn and winter currents, which favor precipitation during this period compared to the rest of the peninsula.
Origins of the Name
We are not sure of the exact origin of the name Sogliano Cavour, but there are several hypotheses. One of these indicates that the name may derive from "Solium Jani," because in the area the god Sol and the god Janus Bifrons were believed to be worshiped. According to another hypothesis, the name could derive from the Latin name "Sollius" with the addition of the suffix "-anus" indicating possession. In any case, since the various names adopted and changed over time are deducible in historical documents, we can be sure that Sogliano Cavour has a long and interesting history.
At the end of the 19th century, the town was called Sogliano Cavour in honor of Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, the first Prime Minister of the new Kingdom of Italy. This name change occurred after the annexation of Puglia to the Kingdom of Italy, to distinguish the town of Sogliano from the city of Sogliano al Rubicone, located in the province of Forlì-Cesena.
