Costeggiola

Costeggiola: a small village divided between two municipalities

Hello everyone, today I want to talk to you about a small town in the province of Verona, called Costeggiola. Divided between the municipalities of Cazzano di Tramigna and Soave, this town is located about 3 km from Cazzano and about 4 km from Soave, on the provincial road 37/a "dei ciliegi". Are you ready to explore the origins, history, monuments and curiosities of Costeggiola with me?

Origin of the name

The toponym Costeggiola comes from the small coast between the hills on which the town stands. A simple but evocative name, which immediately brings to mind the image of the hills surrounding this lovely town.

Costeggiola: Between Hills, History, and Rufiolo.

History

From a historical point of view, the origins of Costeggiola are connected with the events of Soave. There are no historical sources documenting the birth or any events that occurred in this small village. However, we find some mention of it in the 1500s with the construction of the church, dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot. A marble slab, embedded in the first column on the right, commemorates this event. Despite the lack of historical testimony, the beauty and charm of Costeggiola are capable of enchanting anyone who decides to visit this town.

Monuments and places of interest

Religious architecture

The church of Saint Anthony Abbot is one of the main attractions of Costeggiola. It was commissioned by lords of Illasi for the employees who worked their lands near Costeggiola. Over the course of the 16th century, several requests were made by the residents of Costeggiola to celebrate the annual festival mass and to build a house for the chaplain. Over the years, the church was enlarged and restored several times. Three are the most significant interventions: an enlargement in 1663, a refurbishment in 1707, and the last and most radical adaptation in 1938. In 1864, the new cemetery was built, separate from the church, and in 1909 the baptismal font was obtained, allowing for some autonomy from Castelcerino, which until 1929 remained the reference parish. Finally, on June 25, 1929, the episcopal decree arrived, definitively establishing Costeggiola as a parish.

Other

In addition to the church, Costeggiola does not offer many tourist attractions. However, the beauty of the landscape and the quiet and relaxing atmosphere make this town an ideal place for those seeking peace and tranquility away from the chaos of the city.

Society

Religion

As in many other Italian towns, the majority of the population of Costeggiola is Catholic. From an ecclesiastical jurisdiction point of view, the town belongs to the diocese of Verona and is the seat of the parish of Saint Anthony Abbot.

Culture

Events

The ancient Saint Anthony Abbot festival, known as the Rufioi, is worth mentioning. It takes place in January, on the third Sunday of the month. A festival that is very important to the local population, who gather to celebrate the patron saint of the church of Costeggiola.

Gastronomy

If you are a food lover, you cannot miss the Rufiolo di Costeggiola, a traditional Venetian agri-food product. It is a kind of sweet ravioli shaped like a half-moon, which thus has the shape of the rising sun or like the crest of a rooster, and is composed of a filling wrapped in smooth and thin pasta. For the filling, ingredients such as amaretti biscuits, dried grapes, grated bread, meat broth, cedrini, almonds, sugar, eggs, pine nuts, rum, and nutmeg are used; while the ingredients of the pasta are flour, eggs, milk, and salt. A dish that you absolutely must not miss if you decide to visit Costeggiola.

Here is a brief overview of Costeggiola, a small hilly town divided between the municipalities of Cazzano di Tramigna and Soave, where you can savor the charm of an ancient village and the beauty of a breathtaking natural landscape.
