Sizzano

Description of the Municipality

Sizzano is located in the province of Novara, a region in Piedmont. With a population of approximately 1355 inhabitants, it is a small town with a great history. The name Sizzano appears in old documents with various variants such as Sitianum, Siccianum, and Sectianum. The city was already a significant place in Roman times, and even more so after the introduction of Christianity. Sizzano is famous for its Church of San Vittore, a historic gem that dates back to the foundation of the town.

The History of Sizzano

Sizzano has a long and interesting history that dates back to Roman times. The oldest artifact documenting the existence of Sizzano is a stone slab that is now walled inside the facade of the Church of San Vittore. This slab remembers that Tito Tullio Maggiore restored a thermal bath in Sizzano. Over the centuries, Sizzano has been ruled by various lords and has seen many battles and conquests. In the pontificate of Innocent II, Sizzano was called "Pieve" and the village had the prerogative of the Pieve.

The Monastery of San Clemente

Before 1250, Sizzano housed a monastery of friars and nuns of the order of the Humiliati, called San Clemente. Beatrice, daughter of Stefano Guidone and Rachelda di Sassa, had permission to live in the monastery of San Clemente along with several companions. This monastery was located on the hill about 500 meters from the town and was still existent albeit in ruins.

Sizzano Today

Today Sizzano is a small town with a great history. It continues to be famous for the magnificent Church of San Vittore and its Roman stone slab. The Municipality has 1355 inhabitants and is a quiet place where you can enjoy the village life. Wine production is still one of the main activities of Sizzano, thanks to its perfect position for grape cultivation. Sizzano continues to be a place of great historical and cultural interest that is worth visiting.
