The birth of San Martino di Castrozza as a tourist destination dates back to 1873, with the construction of the first alpine hotel that replaced the ancient hospice's woodshed, on a proposal from the Irish mountaineer John Ball (naturalist). In the first decade of the twentieth century, San Martino di Castrozza established itself as a tourist resort and was frequented by the good society of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the devastations of the First World War, the development of the tourist resort was very rapid, especially thanks to the economic miracle. Today, San Martino di Castrozza is one of the most beloved tourist destinations in northern Italy.
