Reggio Calabria: between sea, mountains and history

Physical geography

Territory

The province extended for about 220 km of coastline, from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Ionian Sea, with a large plain called "a chjàna" on the Tyrrhenian coast and the Aspromonte which occupied much of the territory.

Municipalities

The province included 97 municipalities including Reggio Calabria, Palmi, Gioia Tauro and Bova, each with its own characteristics and peculiarities.

History

The Province of Reggio Calabria was established in 1817, when Calabria Ulteriore was divided into two, Ulteriore I and Ulteriore II. The province of Reggio Calabria corresponded to the territories of the ancient province of Calabria Ulteriore Prima.

Over the years, the province of Reggio Calabria operated the Decentralized Administrative District, establishing three districts: the Strait District, the Palmi District and the Locri District.

Conclusions

The province of Reggio Calabria has left an important mark on the history of southern Italy, thanks to its strategic position on the tip of the boot, its territory rich in mountains but also in fertile plains, and its warm and welcoming people. Although it no longer exists as an administrative entity, the province of Reggio Calabria remains alive in the hearts of all those who have been a part of it.
