Let's explore Sinnai: history, geography, and places of interest
Hello friends, today I am taking you to discover Sinnai, an Italian municipality located in the metropolitan city of Cagliari in Sardinia. With its 17,196 inhabitants, Sinnai is located at the foot of Mount Serpeddì, in a favorable position in the plain of Campidano di Cagliari.
Physical geography
Sinnai is located at about 133 m above sea level and is surrounded by numerous nuraghi dating back to the Bronze Age, of which there are about 56.
Origins of the name
The name Sinnai/Sìnnia may derive from the Proto-Sardinian language, meaning Spart or Carex, two types of plants.
History
The territory of Sinnai has a long history that dates back to the Neolithic, when humans began to populate these lands. During the Nuragic civilization period, numerous villages and nuraghi were erected in the area.
In the Middle Ages, after Byzantine domination, Sinnai became part of the Judicate of Cagliari. In the twelfth century, Benedictine and Camaldolese monks arrived here, bringing with them new agricultural techniques and cultural advancement. In 1258, Sinnai came under the control of Pisa and later became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1324.
During this period, Sinnai was given as a fief to Berengario Carroz and his wife Teresa Gombau de Entenza, on condition that the revenues from the fief were used to restore the Castle of San Michele, located near Cagliari. Over the centuries, Sinnai experienced a period of decline, caused by depopulation, high taxes, and plague epidemics.
The town was incorporated into the County of Quirra in 1363 and transformed into a marquisate in 1603. In 1839, Sinnai became a municipality administered by a mayor and a city council, after the end of the feudal system.
In 1796, the town gave birth to Cardinal Luigi Amat di San Filippo e Sorso, a prominent figure in the State of the Church and the Holy See during the Risorgimento. The middle school in the town is named after him.
In 1915, the 151st Infantry Regiment "Sassari" was established. In 1953, Sinnai was the scene of the plane crash that claimed the lives of 19 people.
Symbols
The coat of arms and flag of the municipality of Sinnai were granted by presidential decree in 1964. The flag consists of a blue flag, and the two towers represent the villas of Sinnai and Segossini. The fountain and olive branch, recall the ancient square called "Funtana'e olia". The seven peaks of the mountain represent the massif of Sette Fratelli.
Monuments and places of interest
Sinnai is rich in monuments and places of interest, including the splendid Church of Santa Barbara, which houses a retablo by the Sardinian painter and sculptor Juan Angel Puxeddu.
