The History of the Province of Nuoro

In 1779, Pope Pius VI chose Nuoro as the episcopal seat of the reconstituted diocese of Galtellì, and in 1807 Nuoro became the seat of the Prefecture and Province Court in 1821. During the fascist period, Nuoro was declared a province once again in 1927, with seven historical regions: Barbagie, Baronie, Ogliastra, Marghine, Planargia, Sarcidano and Montiferru. The regime appointed Prefect Ottavio Dinale as the first president of the province, who worked to build the most important public infrastructures in the city and in the province. Despite national unification policies, the regime respected Sardinian autochthonous culture thanks to the mediation of some artists. During the Second World War, the province suffered various attacks and bombings, but the city of Nuoro remained safe thanks to the underground air raid shelters.
