Guazzino is a charming hamlet of the municipality of Sinalunga, located in the province of Siena, in Tuscany. It is halfway between Sinalunga and Bettolle, bordered to the south by the Foenna stream and to the north by the state road 715 Siena-Bettolle.

A brief history of Guazzino

According to tradition, the name of the village derives from Guazzino di Montepulciano, lord of these lands, and his son, Duccio di Guazzino, mentioned in a document from 1310. The hamlet experienced significant growth during the first half of the 20th century, thanks to the presence of clay quarries and the construction of brickworks such as Montemartino and Tempora.

One of the most interesting places in Guazzino is the Pieve di Santa Maria delle Grazie, a church built in the 18th century.

Traditions and folklore

One of the most important festivals in Guazzino was the Madonna delle Rocche, which was held on March 25th. The girls of the hamlet offered Mary the roccas filled with hemp and spun silk, and a large bonfire was lit in front of the church. The Palio delle Rocche was established in 1969, while the religious festival was limited to a procession on the Thursday before the second Sunday after Easter. The three districts of the town (Casaccia, Fontana and Torri) compete to win the Palio with the effigy of the Madonna.
