Simaxis
Simaxis, a brief history of a Sardinian municipality
Simaxis is a municipality located in the province of Oristano in Sardinia. Inhabited since the Nuragic era, Simaxis was part of the Curatoria of Simaxis and belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea during the Middle Ages. After the defeat of the Giudicato, it became part of the Marchesato of Oristano and then, with the Aragonese conquest of Sardinia, it passed to the Carroz family. In 1767, it was incorporated into the Marchesato d'Arcais, a feud of the Nurra family, which was redeemed in 1839 with the abolition of the feudal system. In 1928, the San Vero Congius district was added.
Symbols and society
The flag of Simaxis is a yellow drape. The variant of the Sardinian language spoken in Simaxis is Campidanese/Oristanese Sardinian. The demographic evolution of the municipality has not been significant in recent decades.
Culture
The village is famous for the Rice Day, usually held in November. Moreover, Simaxis is known for its carnival, called "Sa Coja de tziu Damus" ("the marriage of Signor Damus"), where the population wears traditional agro-pastoral clothes and celebrates on the Saturday of the week of Mardi Gras. The festival ends with a wedding dinner, where all the "guests" bring chairs and food from their homes. Both events are organized and realized by the Rural Association Pro Loco of Simaxis.
The patron saint of the village is San Simmaco Papa, celebrated on July 19 with religious celebrations and the patronal festival organized by a committee of fifty-year-olds. In the past, Simaxis also hosted the "Mraxani Rumor Fest," a music festival that was carried on for some years thanks to the commitment of young people and the support of the Municipality and various local associations.
