The mysteries of the origin of the name

The origin of the name Silvi is still unknown, breathtaking! Some historians believe it comes from ''Silvae'' due to the abundance of woods, while others think it's derived from the name of Silvanus, an ancient deity of forests. In Roman times, the municipality was known as ''Matrinum'' and then ''Silvae'', while during the Middle Ages it was known as Castel Belfiore or ''Castrum Silvi''.

A brief history lesson

Born as a small hillside village, the fate of Silvi was shared in the 6th and 5th centuries BC with the powerful Hatria Picena (Atri), then conquered by the Romans in 290 BC, becoming the ''Castrum Silvae''. In the medieval period, the village began to structure into a real town and was not spared by the invasions of Turkish and Saracen corsairs.

The village was surrounded by a city wall, with three control towers, among which is the Belfiore Tower, which allowed for a tactical view of the coast and mountains, from east to west and north to south.

In 1393, King Ladislaus of Naples sold Silvi to Duke Antonio Acquaviva for 30,000 ducats.
