Welcome to San Biagio di Callalta
Welcome to San Biagio di Callalta, an Italian municipality located in the province of Treviso in Veneto. With a population of 12,663 inhabitants, this municipality has a rich history dating back to Roman times.
The history of San Biagio di Callalta
The territory on which the municipality of San Biagio di Callalta is located was inhabited by the Venetian population, as evidenced by archaeological findings attributable to their culture. When Veneto was subjected to the Romans, the territory gained greater importance thanks to the construction of the Annia and Postumia roads, as well as a road that connected them.
During the late Roman Empire, two toponyms were formed, "Caurillium" and "Prandecinum", now Cavriè and north of Rovarè respectively. Legend has it that Prando, nephew of Anterio lord of Altino, built a fortress near the Sile river to defend the Altinati from the attacks of the Trevigiani. Two buildings were erected in the two sites for worship, respectively the church of San Biagio di Cavriè, mentioned in 1152 among the parish churches of the diocese of Treviso, and the church of San Lorenzo di Prandecino, known since 1021 as a dependence of the Abbey of San Zeno.
In the following centuries, the territory underwent extensive agricultural reclamation thanks to the influence of the Benedictines of Monastier di Treviso, who were responsible for the birth of Rovarè, Fagarè della Battaglia and Sant'Andrea di Barbarana. The Callalta road, built on an embankment, also represented the border between the Treviso districts of Zosagna di Sopra and di Sotto and became a new inhabited center from the beginning of the 14th century.
Over time, more or less sumptuous residences developed, from simple rural buildings to villas with valuable architecture. Noble Venetian families such as Sugana, Sala, Giudici, Da Lezze, Navagero and Caotorta had a great impact on the municipality of San Biagio di Callalta.
