The history of Silanus

Like many Sardinian municipalities, Silanus also boasts a long history. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times and there are numerous artifacts from the Nuragic period. During the Middle Ages, Silanus was part of the Kingdom of Torres and later of the Marquisate of Oristano. In 1478, it came under Aragonese rule.

The symbols of Silanus

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Silanus is composed of an upper part depicting the Church of Santa Sabina (Silanus) and the Nuragic complex of Santa Sarbana. In the lower part, on a red background, there are seven ears of golden wheat. A symbol that evokes the richness of this land.

Silanus is rich in monuments and places of interest. Among the main ones, we can mention the Church of Santa Sabina, the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate and the Nuragic complex of Santa Sarbana di Santa Sabina: Su Cherchizzu.

Silanus is known worldwide for the particular longevity of its population. Here, in fact, there is a high number of centenarians of both sexes. For this reason, in 2004, the town was mentioned in National Geographic.

The variant of the Sardinian language spoken in Silanus is Sardo Logudorese. Here you can also discover the local traditions and celebrations, including Sant'Antonio Abate, San Lorenzo Martire and Santa Sabina.
