The Sorra stream, a tributary of the Arbia, originates in Sant'Andrea.
History of the hamlet
Montecchio was formerly an ancient municipality affiliated with Masse di Siena, hence the name Montecchio delle Masse di Città. It was a "comunello" before it was abolished following the Leopoldine administrative reorganization of 1785.

Following the apparition, Pope Eugene IV had the church enlarged, adding a hospital with an oratory. The portal of the building was decorated in 1473.
