Welcome to Siderno: the jewel of the Calabrian Ionian coast

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Siderno, a delightful town on the Calabrian Ionian coast. With its 17,615 inhabitants, Siderno is the largest and most populous urban center in this splendid area between Reggio Calabria and Catanzaro. The city is divided into two parts: the old town of Siderno Superiore, located on a hill, and the modern Siderno Marina, which extends along the Coast of Gelsomini.

The history of Siderno

The history of Siderno has very ancient roots, but the first precise information dates back to 1220, when the name appears in records of the Swabian age. According to some historians, Siderno may have been a Greek colony dating back to the 8th-6th century BC, thanks to the ancient district of the foundries of Locri. Over the years, the city has been under the dominion of the Ruffo counts of Catanzaro and other feudal lords. In 1869, the seat of the municipality was transferred from the ancient part of Siderno to the modern Siderno Marina.
