Siapiccia

Welcome to Siapiccia: History and Origins of the Name

Hello everyone and welcome to Siapiccia! We are pleased to tell you a little about the history of this Sardinian municipality located in the province of Oristano. Siapiccia has its roots dating back to the times of the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, as evidenced by the presence of ancient tombs and graffiti. During the Roman era, Siapiccia served as a garrison along a road that connected Fordongianus to Usellus. The original name of the village in Sardinian, "sa ìa picìa," means "the small road," proving that at the time it was only frequented by a few inhabitants, compared to the main road that ran through the town of Siamanna ("sa ìa manna," meaning "the large road"). In the Middle Ages, Siapiccia was under the control of the Judicate of Arborea, before passing under the authority of Oristano. Only in 1975, thanks to the result of a referendum, Siapiccia was able to establish itself as an autonomous municipality.

Symbols and Society

An interesting curiosity concerns the symbols of the Municipality of Siapiccia: the coat of arms and the banner were granted only in 2001, by decree of the President of the Republic. Speaking instead of the population, the municipality has about 343 inhabitants. The language spoken in Siapiccia is Campidanese Sardinian, or more specifically the variant of Limba de mesania. It is a dialect that retains many similarities with Sardinian Arborense.

Demographic Evolution and Administration

The demographics of Siapiccia have undergone several evolutions over time. In 1928, the territory of the Municipality of Siapiccia joined those of Villaurbana and Siamanna, before splitting off in 1975, as we have seen. The management of the affairs of the Municipality is entrusted to the Mayor and the Municipal Council. An important fact to mention is the redemption of the feud of Siapiccia that occurred in 1839, which made the municipality a democracy administered by a local government.
