Brief history of the town

Sgurgola has a very interesting history, full of traditions and legends. It is said that the town was founded by the famous Spartan gladiator, Spartacus, who led the slave revolt in 73-71 BC. According to other versions, the town was created during the barbarian invasions, as a refuge for the populations of Anagni and Ferentino. The name of the town, Sculcula, has a Latin origin and could derive from the Gothic skulks, which means "sentinel" or "guard". The town also hosted the physician and prophet Arnaldo da Villanova, who composed one of his most important apocalyptic works here, the "De mysterio cymbalorum Ecclesiae".
