Discovering the Municipality of Seulo
Hi friends, today we will talk about a small Italian municipality, called Seulo (or Seùlu in Sardinian language), located in the province of South Sardinia. This municipality has a population of about 790 inhabitants and is the capital of the Barbagia di Seùlo region, in the stunning island of Sardinia.
History
The area where Seulo stands today has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the Nuraghe and the giants' tombs present in the territory. In the Middle Ages, Seulo was part of the judicate of Cagliari and later came under the control of the Republic of Pisa and the Aragonese. Over the centuries, Seulo has passed through different families until the suppression of the feudal system in 1839. In 2003, with Regional Law No. 10, the municipality was transferred from the province of Nuoro to that of Cagliari.
Symbols
The coat of arms and the banner of Seulo were granted by decree of the President of the Republic in 2010. The banner is a yellow cloth.
Physical Geography
Territory
Seulo has an area of 58.9 square kilometers and is located between 281 and 1,334 meters above sea level. The territory is predominantly mountainous and is part of the Gennargentu foothills, separated from it by the Flumendosa river, which offers a charming natural spectacle. Seulo presents a landscape characterized by deep gorges, sinkholes, crystalline ponds, rapids and waterfalls, all surrounded by typical Mediterranean vegetation. The presence of caves with magnificent stalactites and stalagmites contributes to making the territory unique. The vegetation that characterizes the Seulo area is composed of different species of trees and shrubs, including holm oak, cork oak, myrtle, strawberry tree, red juniper and numerous medicinal herbs. Moreover, the fauna of the territory is made up of different species of animals, including the mouflon, wild boar, wildcat and golden eagle.
