Settimo Rottaro

Hello everyone, I present to you Settimo Rottaro!

Settimo Rottaro, or Ël Seto Rojé as it is called in Piedmontese, is a small town located in the metropolitan city of Turin, in Piedmont. With its 466 inhabitants, it is a peaceful place located on the extreme boundary of the eastern Canavese region, a few steps from Lake Viverone and surrounded by Cossano Canavese, Borgo d'Ale, Alice Castello and Caravino.

History

The name Settimo Rottaro is said to derive from the ancient name of a hill near the village, rich in brambles. Other hypotheses trace it back to the wheels of carts, as it was a place of transit, or to the name of the Lombard king Rotari of the 7th century. The first documented traces of the village date back to 1227, when the village was subjected to the Episcopal authority of Ivrea. During the centuries, Settimo Rottaro was at the center of noble uprisings and moments of conflict against the House of Savoy, until it was definitively annexed by the Duchy of Savoy.

The village has two interesting churches to visit: the Church of San Bononio, patron saint of the municipality, from 1787, located on the homonymous "cella" and restored by the famous architect Carlo Andrea Rana; and the Church of the Confraternity of the Trinity, in a central position, along Via Commendator Vachino.

Traditions

In the 20th century, Settimo Rottaro was famous for the production of an excellent passito Erbaluce di Caluso wine, but the tradition has been lost. In its place, every first Sunday of February, the traditional salame di patate festival is held, a typical local product.
