Premenugo

Premenugo: a small town in Lombardy

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a beautiful town in Lombardy called Premenugo. It is a hamlet of Settala, in the province of Milan, with a population of about 1,100 inhabitants.

History

Did you know that Premenugo was a separate municipality from Settala for many centuries? Its foundation dates back to one or two centuries after that of Settala, but the first documents referring to the town date back to the 13th century. Premenugo fought alongside other municipalities in the Lombard League against Frederick Barbarossa in the Middle Ages. A symbol of those struggles is the castle, still partially existing in the Castello farm near the town. In 1869, the municipality of Premenugo was abolished and the town was annexed to Settala.

Description

Premenugo is located north of Settala, only 1 km away. Over the centuries, Premenugo has not developed much and remains a very small and welcoming town, with a population of less than 900 inhabitants in 1990. In the last ten years, many terraced houses have been built to the south, towards Settala. The center of the town is the Church of S. Tommaso, which has a square that never existed in Premenugo, as the center was enlarged in 2004 and the whole area was repaved with cobblestones. The only industrial area is located one kilometer to the west, in the Dosso locality, towards Lucino and Rodano, although activity has sharply declined in the 80s and 90s.

Before World War II, the people of Premenugo were called "i spazzapollé" (the chimney sweepers), a nickname that probably derives from the activity of collecting debris and dry leaves from the streets.
