Physical Geography
Sestriere is located on the Colle del Sestriere, which connects the Val Chisone and the Valle di Susa, surrounded by the mountains Fraiteve, Sises, Punta Rognosa di Sestriere, and Monte Motta. There are several inhabited centers, such as Sestriere Colle, Sestriere Borgata, Champlas du Col, and Champlas Janvier.
The climate of Sestriere is typical of the Alps, characterized by cool and humid summers and cold and snowy winters. In winter, Sestriere is one of the most loved Italian municipalities for its abundant snowfall, which usually starts from October and lasts until April.
Origins of the Name
Sestriere derives from "Petra Sextreria", the sixth stone used as a trigonometric reference point to measure the distance in miles from Turin.
History
The municipality of Sestriere was created in 1934 on the lands of Champlas du Col, Borgata, and Sauze di Cesana, thanks to the purchase of Giovanni Agnelli, the founder of FIAT. Agnelli built two hotels with the theme of Italian rationalism of the time and three cable cars, directed towards the mountains Monte Sises, Banchetta, and Monte Fraiteve.
The administrative life of the new municipality began on January 1, 1935, with the emblem that represented skiing, the symbol of Sestriere's vocation as a winter resort. In the 1930s, a new road, a ski jumping ramp, the "Principi di Piemonte" hotel, and an 18-hole golf course were built.
During World War II, tourism was halted, and the facilities were damaged, but Sestriere quickly recovered and became even more popular as a tourist destination.
