The history of Sesto Fiorentino

Sesto Fiorentino has an ancient history that dates back to the Mesolithic period, approximately 9,000 years ago. In the Neolithic period, around 6,000 years ago, the area was already densely populated with agricultural and pastoral villages. There is archaeological evidence of ceramic furnaces, while the Copper and Bronze Age saw the presence of communities that inhabited both the plain and the surrounding hills.

During the Etruscan period, which began around the 7th century BC, the area was reclaimed and numerous tombs were built.

In Roman times, the ancient consular road to Pistoia and Lucca was built, and Sesto Fiorentino became an important inhabited center along the road. In the Late Middle Ages, the first churches were built, including the Pieve di San Martino. Sesto was a fiefdom of the Florentine bishops, but the inhabitants rebelled against the excessive taxes and were excommunicated.

During the Renaissance, the city experienced significant development thanks to the reclamation of the plain and the establishment, by Marquis Carlo Ginori, of the Doccia Factory, one of the first porcelain factories in Europe.

In 1860, on the occasion of the referendum on the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, the population of Sesto Fiorentino declared itself strongly in favor of the union with the Kingdom.
