Monuments and places of interest

Sesto Campano boasts many monuments of historical and artistic interest, which we invite you to visit during your stay in our municipality.

Church of Sant'Eustachio Placido

The church of Sant'Eustachio Placido was founded in the thirteenth century and maintained the form of a medieval church until 1802, when restorations transformed it into a neoclassical church. The facade of the church has side columns with Ionic capitals and Latin inscriptions on the architrave. The tower bell has a clock. The rest of the church, in an external context, remains medieval with rough stone material and a raised level on the transept.

The interior of the church is very rich: two altars for the patron and San Domenico, made of polychrome marble with representations of flowers and circles of cornice, from the Abruzzo and Neapolitan schools. One of the authors is Tommaso Brunetti di Alfedena (eighteenth century). The San Domenico altar is particularly rich, with a wind rose on the marble panel, two side flowers and a cameo angel in the cell where chalice and hosts are kept.

Spinola Castle

The Spinola Castle, of Benevento Ducato origin, is mentioned for the first time in a document of 1064, on the occasion of the donation of Count Paldone of Venafro to Pope Vittore III. It was purchased by Filippo Spinola in 1582 and was modified in the seventeenth century. It develops on three levels with a large internal courtyard. Even today, the castle conserves elements of the Lombard age, such as square and sober corner towers, and the filled moat. Today the Spinola Castle is used as a museum and outdoor theater.

Angioina Fortress of Roccapipirozzi

The Angioina Fortress of Roccapipirozzi was built before 1320 and still retains its original appearance today. The castle is rectangular, with various crenellations and beakworks. Of particular interest is the large cylindrical tower with traces of crenellations on the summit. On the southern corner, there is a second splayed tower for the reserve protection of the castle. Until the wars of the fifteenth century, the castle served as the main stronghold to defend Molise from invasions from Campania or Lazio.
