History

The village of Serravalle was probably built by the inhabitants of the ancient Roman city of Libarna, destroyed in 452 due to the barbarian invasions.

With the advent of the Lombard kingdom, an urban agglomeration developed on the Armanina hill, mentioned for the first time in a document by Charlemagne.

From 1122 Serravalle belonged to the bishops of Tortona, until it was ceded to the Municipality of Tortona in exchange for the defense of their lands.

The toponym "Serravalle" is found for the first time in a public act of 1140, through which the Municipalities of Tortona and the Republic of Genoa agreed on their borders.

During the following centuries, Serravalle passed into the hands of various noble families, including the Spinola, Visconti and Adorno.

During the War of the Spanish Succession of 1713, the village was ceded to the Austrians and in 1738, together with the Tortonese, passed to the possessions of the House of Savoy.

During the Napoleonic wars, Serravalle was annexed to the Ligurian Republic by the French.

In 1863 the municipality assumed the new denomination of "Serravalle Scrivia" and in 1937, during the fascist period, the name was changed again to "Serravalle Libarna", before returning to the original name in 1946.

Monuments and places of interest

Serravalle Scrivia has its own coat of arms and flag. The coat of arms depicts the castle of the town and the Mont Blanc glacier in the center, symbolizing its geographical position between the mountains and the plain.

The flag is made up of a cloth divided into three bands: a red one in the center and two white ones on the sides, with the municipal coat of arms in the center.
