The name Serrastretta derives from the fact that it is located between two Serre and was founded in 1383 by some families from Scigliano who were seeking refuge from Jewish persecutions. It was a fiefdom of the Caracciolo family and was later purchased by the D'Aquino. In 1595, the Royal Court of Calabria Ultra, following a census, raised the town to the status of University (today Municipality). In 1807, Serrastretta was elevated to a circumscriptional seat of the Kingdom's Governments, then confirmed and expanded by Royal Decree in 1816 by King Ferdinando di Borbone and the subsequent restructuring carried out in 1860 after the Unification of Italy.
