Serra Riccò

Welcome to Serra Riccò!

Hello everyone, today I want to talk to you about Serra Riccò, a small municipality in Liguria with a population of about 7500 inhabitants. Located in the Polcevera Valley, Serra Riccò is a charming place that I recommend you to visit if you love hills and unspoiled nature.

Physical geography

Serra Riccò extends over a mainly hilly territory and is surrounded by towering peaks such as Mount Pizzo, Mount Carmo, and Mount Capanna. The highest heights are reached on the border with the municipality of Montoggio, where we find the group of Mount Sella di Sant'Olcese. The main watercourse is the Secca stream, whose course was decisive in the formation of the fractions of the municipality, such as Pedemonte, Castagna, and Mainetto.

History

The territory of Serra Riccò has an ancient and fascinating history. Since Roman times, the fractions that are now part of the municipality already existed and were part of the ancient roads that connected the Ligurian coast with the hinterland and the Po Valley. Here we find the centers of San Cipriano and Serra, both of which became a parish in the Middle Ages.

One of the most important roads was the "Salt Routes," which led from Genoa to the Scrivia Valley through the Crocetta d'Orero pass. In this area, important archaeological finds have been found, such as the Niusci hoard, which testifies to a flourishing coinage activity in pre-Roman Liguria.

Serra Riccò is a small municipality but rich in things to see. The fraction of Pedemonte is home to the Sanctuary of San Rocco, which is worth a visit to admire its frescoes and for the panoramic view of the surrounding hills.
