History
Serra d'Aiello has a very interesting history. In the 19th century, it had about 900 inhabitants who were mainly engaged in agriculture and rearing the Bombyx mori, a silk worm. Thanks to its excellent production of wine, olive oil, and fruit, Serra d'Aiello was able to prosper over the years. Furthermore, the Arbereshe language (gjuha arbëreshe), which is an ancient Italo-Albanian language, was used until around 1870 and is still spoken today in some Albanian communities in Italy. However, the town lost the Byzantine rite at the same time as other towns like Santa Caterina Albanese, San Martino di Finita, Cerzeto, Rota Greca, and Spezzano Albanese, and adopted the Latin rite.

Despite the passing of time, Serra d'Aiello continues to be a town very tied to its roots.
