Sernaglia della Battaglia

Welcome to Sernaglia della Battaglia!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about a small Italian municipality located in the province of Treviso, in Veneto. Sernaglia della Battaglia is a beautiful village of about 6,064 inhabitants that extends in the central-southern area of the Piave Quartier.

Physical geography

The first thing that catches the eye of those arriving in Sernaglia della Battaglia is the beauty of its territory, which is almost flat. It extends from Montello (hill) to 89 to 129 m above sea level going from the south-eastern end to the northern end. The main watercourse that bathes the country is the Piave, which marks the southern border. The riverbed flows a few meters lower than the surrounding land, forming a sort of wooded slope of considerable natural interest.

Sernaglia della Battaglia: between history and nature.

Etymology

Have you ever wondered where the name of this beautiful municipality comes from? Then let me tell you a curiosity: "della Battaglia" was added to the original denomination "Sernaglia" in 1924, in reference to the events of the Great War.

History

Sernaglia della Battaglia has ancient origins. In the Falzè district, an ancient port on the Piave and a center of commercial exchanges of interests, finds dating back to historical periods such as the Bronze Age and the Paleovenetian era were discovered. In the rest of the territory, there are traces of Roman presence.

Under the Serenissima Republic of Venice, the country remained under its lordship until 1797. Over the years, it suffered various invasions by the French and Austrians and was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.

During the twentieth century, the population of Sernaglia della Battaglia suffered a massive exodus due to the sad living conditions and the two world wars. However, this exodus allowed to invest in the private initiatives of many small entrepreneurs, who led the country out of the rural reality in which it was located.

Symbols

The coat of arms of Sernaglia della Battaglia was approved in 1950. The blue band represents the Piave River that bathes the country. The two silver crossed swords are placed in memory of the victorious start of the battle of the Piave, in October 1918. The profile of three green hills symbolizes the hilly terrain.

The municipal banner is a blue drapery.

Honors

During the First World War, Sernaglia della Battaglia was strategically important along the Piave line. The country suffered Austro-Hungarian military occupation and the total destruction of the inhabited area. The population, hard hit by mourning and violence, was forced to evacuate and abandon all personal belongings but showed great spirit in helping those in need. The survivors then showed an unwavering will, managing to react to the horrors of war. For this reason, the Gold Medal for Civil Merit was awarded to Sernaglia della Battaglia.

Conclusion

Here is Sernaglia della Battaglia for you! A municipality that encloses the beauty of nature and history, a place where the population has reacted to difficulties, showing determination and courage. If you have the opportunity to visit it, you won't regret it! See you in Veneto!
