Lestans: history, art and nature in an ancient Friulian village.

A thousand-year history

Lestans was first mentioned in the Papal Bull of 1184 by Urban III as "Plebem de Lestans". But its origins date back much earlier, probably to Roman times. The toponym could derive from the Latin personal name "Estius" and numerous finds from Roman times have been found on its land. In the Middle Ages, Lestans was part of the feud of the Counts of Castelnovo and then of the Counts of Gorizia. In 1511 it passed under the control of the Savorgnan Counts until the Napoleonic period. The symbol of this history is the Villa Savorgnan, built in the sixteenth century, which still retains its Venetian beauty.

Monuments and places of interest

For those who love history and art, Lestans offers numerous attractions. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, with its sixteenth-century frescoes by Pomponio Amalteo, is a must-see. Villa Savorgnan hosts the Casa del '900 Exhibition and an archaeological collection, while in the nearby museums La Casa del 900 and I Vecchi Mestieri, you can discover the ancient local artisanal traditions.

Not just history

But Lestans is not just history and art, it also offers a range of outdoor activities. As we have said, the plain surrounding the village is ideal for walks and bike rides, but there are also opportunities for fishing or horseback riding. In addition, during the summer months, cultural and gastronomic events are organized that allow you to taste traditional Friulian cuisine.

Conclusions

In conclusion, if you're looking for a quiet tourist destination, immersed in nature and history, Lestans won't disappoint. Its strategic location makes it easily reachable from many nearby places, but at the same time allows you to savor the authenticity of country life. We recommend visiting all the attractions we have presented and discovering the secrets of this small Friulian treasure for yourself.
