Physical geography

Territory

Sennori extends as an amphitheater between hills and a valley and overlooks the Gulf of Asinara, in the north of Sardinia. Thanks to its position, it is possible to enjoy a spectacular view of the coasts of the gulf from Stintino to Castelsardo, including the Asinara island. The surrounding territory is rich in fertile fields that host olive groves, orchards, and vineyards, whose productions are of primary interest for the economy of Sennori.

Sennori is located at an altitude of 277 m above sea level and is inhabited by almost 7000 people. Its territorial surface is about 26 km2. The town is located on a calcareous tufo hill and dominates the entire arc of the Gulf of Asinara. It borders the municipalities of Sassari, Osilo, and Sorso and is characterized by a fairly fertile soil, where olive, vine, fruit trees, and artichokes thrive. Pastoralism, on the other hand, is practiced only by breeders from other locations.

Prehistory and Nuragic era

Man settled in this territory since the Neolithic, as confirmed by the numerous archaeological sites present in areas such as the domus de janas dell'Orto di Beneficio Parrocchiale, the necropolis of Serra Crabiles, and other places like the nuraghe of Badde Margherita, the Nuraghe of Badde Puttu, and the Nuraghe of San Biagio.

In 1082 Sennori was mentioned for the first time in a historical document, namely the deed of donation to the Opera della Primaziale Pisana of the monastery of San Michele di Plaiano with all its appurtenances, including the "Domo de Sanctae Maria de Sennor".
