Welcome to Senigallia: a city rich in history and nature

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about a city that is particularly dear to me: Senigallia. It is located in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region, and is a municipality of 44,169 inhabitants. The name of the town in the Gallo-Piceno dialect is ''S'nigaja''. Senigallia is a city that has encountered history and nature since its origins, and it is precisely this that makes it unique.

Physical geography

Territory

The city is located on the middle-Adriatic coast, at the mouth of the Misa river. The surrounding territory is mainly flat but is surrounded by hills that slope down towards the sea. The historic center of Senigallia was built following the urban layout of the Roman city, founded on a hill south of the Misa river.

Climate

The climate in Senigallia is sub-littoral, with hot and stuffy summers and cold and humid winters, but don't worry because snowfalls are quite rare and do not exceed 20 cm in thickness.

History

Pre-Roman period

Senigallia has ancient origins. Initially, the city was founded between 389 and 383 BC by the Gallic tribe of the Senones, who had settled in the north of the Marche region. From here, the Gauls, led by the fearsome Brennus, moved against Rome and managed to defeat the Roman armies. Following this victory, the Romans chose to pay a heavy tribute. The most important testimony of this period is the Piceno settlement with an attached necropolis near Montedoro di Scapezzano.

Roman city

After the Battle of Sentinum, the Romans had definitive control over the territory between the Esino and Montone rivers, populated by the Senoni Gauls. In 284 BC, at the urging of the Consul Manius Curius Dentatus, the Romans established the Roman colony of ''Sena Gallica'', in place of what was the "capital" of the Gauls in Italy, to distinguish it from the other colony ''Sena'' (now Siena) located in Etruria, Tuscany.

Beaches, sea and nature

Senigallia is an ideal destination for lovers of the sea and nature. With its 13 km of golden beach, one of the most beautiful and cleanest on the Adriatic coast, it offers endless possibilities for fun. The sea of Senigallia is famous for being one of the cleanest in the Adriatic, and has obtained the Blue Flag for the quality of the water and services offered.

But Senigallia is not only the sea: it is also a territory that offers many other natural beauties. The Natural Reserve of the Frasassi Caves is famous, a complex of caves characterized by stalactites and stalagmites of rare beauty.

Art and culture

Senigallia boasts a long artistic and cultural tradition. The city is famous for the Rotonda a Mare, a characteristic building overlooking the sea, which hosts cultural events and shows throughout the year. The historic center of Senigallia, which extends around the main street (Corso 2 Giugno), offers endless opportunities to admire churches, historic palaces, and ancient castles.

Events and gastronomy

Senigallia is a city that always offers events and shows for all tastes. The most famous is undoubtedly the Summer Jamboree, a festival of music and culture of the 40s and 50s that attracts visitors from all over the world. But there are also many other events such as the Carnival of Senigallia, the Sant'Agostino Fair, and the Beer Festival.

Finally, but not least, gastronomy. Marche cuisine is famous all over the world: in Senigallia, you can taste the typical traditional dishes such as olive all'ascolana, tagliatelle with hare ragout and stuffed cuttlefish, accompanied by a good glass of red wine from Conero.

Conclusions

Senigallia is a city that contains infinite treasures: history, art, nature, the sea, gastronomy, and much more. If you are looking for a vacation destination that can satisfy all your desires, Senigallia is the perfect choice!
