Physical Geography

The territory of Senerchia is predominantly mountainous and hilly, housing the southeastern foothills of the Picentini Mountains. The town is located at 600 meters above sea level and extends in the high Valle del Sele, on a hilly area of the eastern slope of the aforementioned mountain group.

The surrounding landscape is dominated by the steep slopes of Monte Boscotiello and crossed by waterways such as Vallone Rovivo, Vallone Forma, Piceglia, Fiumicello, Rovivo, Pozzo San Nicola, Acquabianca, and Vallone Badoleia (also known as Vallone Varleia).

Climate

From a climatic point of view, Senerchia has a mountain climate, classified as zone E, 2101 degree days. The average annual temperature is 13.6°C, with an average of 8.4°C in the coldest month (January) and 22.5°C in the hottest month (August). Precipitation also follows a typical trend of the cold season, with a maximum in the months of November, December, and January, with an annual average of 1778 mm.

History

The history of Senerchia has ancient origins, as testified by the numerous archaeological finds discovered in the territory. According to some scholars, the name refers to the local names of the northern Tuscan Silerchia, Silerchie, which presuppose a "silercula" from the Latin "siler" plant that grows in water-rich places.

The center has undergone numerous vicissitudes over the centuries, including the destruction caused by the Irpinia earthquake of 1980.

Senerchia is a lively and vibrant place that offers numerous initiatives and events throughout the year. Among them, the patron saint's festivity of San Pietro, celebrated on June 29th, and the Mushroom Festival, organized in September.

How to get to Senerchia

By Car

To reach Senerchia by car, you must take the A16 Naples-Bari motorway, exit at Avellino west and follow the directions for Strada provinciale 22. After about 30 km, you reach the municipality.

By Train

The nearest railway station is that of Salerno, about 50 km from Senerchia. From here, you can take a bus or a taxi to reach the town.
