Catabbio is a small hamlet in the municipality of Semproniano, located among the gentle hills of Maremma Grossetana in Tuscany. The town is about 5 km away from the centre of the municipal headquarters and 65 km away from the city of Grosseto. The village of Catabbio has an ancient and fascinating history. Here, there was the ancient castle of the Aldobrandeschi, dating back to the 11th century, which was later transformed into a fortified farm. The hamlet was part of the municipalities of Sorano and Manciano before merging into Semproniano.

The monuments of Catabbio

Catabbio is a place rich in history and culture, with numerous monuments and places of interest to discover. Among the most important are the Church of Sant'Anna, designed by the architect Carlo Moni and inaugurated in 1972, and the Church of Santa Lucia, which houses a font dating back to 1574. A visit to the Castle of Catabbio, located on the hill of Catabbiaccio, and the Memorial of the Fallen in all Wars, located in the centre of the hamlet, is also unmissable.

Society in Catabbio

Catabbio is a small-scale hamlet, characterized by a welcoming and supportive community. There are about 175 inhabitants, distributed among the four districts of Verziliani, Casa Rigo, Santarello and Scalabrelli. It should be noted that since 1991, ISTAT only counts the inhabitants of the built-up area, not of the hamlet.

Traditions and folklore

Catabbio is a place where traditions are still alive and respected. The patron saint festival of Sant'Anna is celebrated on July 26th, while Santa Lucia is celebrated on December 13th with a eucharistic celebration in her church in the district of Scalabrelli. In addition, on February 3rd, Saint Blaise, the patron saint of animals and throat, is celebrated and the famous "migliacci", a typical dish similar to crêpes, are prepared.

The districts of Catabbio

Catabbio is divided into four districts, each with its own peculiarities. Verziliani is the district located at the highest point, with a splendid panoramic view of the surrounding hills. Casa Rigo, on the other hand, is the district located at the lowest point, along the road that leads to Pitigliano. Santarello is the district that houses the Church of Sant'Anna and the centre of the village. Finally, Scalabrelli is the oldest district, where the Church of Santa Lucia and the historical centre of the hamlet are located.
