Sellia Marina

A coastal city in Calabria

Hi everyone! Today I want to tell you about Sellia Marina, a beautiful city located in Calabria, in the province of Catanzaro. With its 7692 inhabitants, it is the fourth most populous municipality in the province, after the capital, Lamezia Terme and Soverato. The city is located at the northern tip of a densely populated area that runs from Catanzaro and reaches Soverato for a total of around 150,000 inhabitants.

A breathtaking seaside location

The territory of Sellia Marina covers an area of 4,086 hectares and overlooks the Gulf of Squillace, between the Simeri and Frasso rivers. Here you can admire almost 14 kilometers of beach, each more enchanting than the other. The beauty of the sea was recognized in 2018, when the city won the Blue Flag for the first time, an authoritative international recognition awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education. This prestigious award was not only confirmed in 2019, but also in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Sellia Marina: a coastal city nestled between the sea and history.

I open my heart

I'll confess something: I love the history and peculiarities of places like Sellia Marina. Do you know where the name of the city comes from? I discovered that there is not much information about it. Unfortunately, the origin of the name is not known!

A young city

Sellia Marina became an autonomous municipality on December 14, 1956, with the institutional law No. 1439 of December 13 of the same year. Before that date, its territory belonged to the municipalities of Sellia, Simeri Crichi, Soveria Simeri, Magisano, Albi, Sersale and Cropani, all in the province of Catanzaro. With d.P.R. of 27 October 1958, No. 1078, its boundaries were determined, approving the planimetric map and the descriptive report. In 2022, the city achieved another important milestone, receiving the title of city, awarded on July 15th.

A cultural heritage to be safeguarded

Sellia Marina is a city rich in history and monuments that absolutely deserve to be visited. Among the places of interest, I feel like mentioning the Madonna del Carmine parish, located in the Uria fraction, and the Ss. Rosario parish, whose mother church is located in the center of the municipality. Furthermore, you cannot leave the city without visiting the De Seta chapel, located in the Feudo De Seta fraction, the Stella Maris church in SS Jonica 106, the chapel of the Santissimo Rosario in the Calabricata fraction or the chapel of Santa Rita, in the Frasso district.

A varied but traditional economy

The economy of Sellia Marina is varied and is based on many activities, including craftsmanship. The glass processing is one of the traditional activities that made the city famous. Many agricultural companies are scattered throughout the territory and stand out for the production of Clementines of Calabria and citrus groves, olive trees and winemaking activities.

A paradise for tourists

Do you love the sea and respect for the environment? Sellia Marina is the place for you! In 2020, the city was awarded the Blue Flag by the specialized entity Foundation for Environmental Education. This award is given to seaside resorts that have distinguished themselves for their rigorous respect for criteria related to the sustainable management of the territory and concrete environmental sustainability policies.

Let's go!

How to reach Sellia Marina? You have many ways available: the most important communication routes are the SS 106 and the Taranto-Reggio Calabria railway section. The municipality is 21 km from the center of Catanzaro (11 km from the Catanzaro Lido district), 55 km from Lamezia Terme airport, 50 km from Crotone and Crotone airport, 50 km from Sila Piccola and 40 km from Soverato. If you are looking for a regenerating vacation by the sea, in a place that combines tradition and modernity, Sellia Marina is the right choice for you!
