Selargius

Selargius, a city rich in history on the southern coast of Sardinia

Selargius is an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Cagliari located in the southern part of Sardinia. This city has a long history dating back to the Protosardinian period as evidenced by the existence of the eneolithic village of "Villaggio eneolitico Su Coddu" of Culture of Ozieri and Sub-Ozieri, and the villages of "Cuccuru Matt'e Masonis" and "Staineddu". These places have an exceptional cultural heritage, and it is wonderful to see how the population has concentrated in two villages that gave rise to the current settlement: "Cellarium" and "Palmas".

The history of Selargius

Centuries of migrations and conquests have changed the lives of the population of Selargius. In 1258, Selargius passed from the jurisdiction of the giudicato of Cagliari to the Aragonese. Later, it passed to the Giudicato d'Arborea, the Republic of Pisa, and began a period of wars and conquests between the invaders and the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1366, Mariano IV d'Arborea built a fortified camp near Selargius to block supplies to Cagliari.

The historian Raimondo Carta Raspi in his "History of Sardinia" describes the fortifications as a trench or ditch still visible today in a building on via Rosselli with an old arch and pylons that sink about 3 meters below street level. The trench formed an almost perfect square of 4 hectares with sides of 200 m corresponding to via Rosselli, the initial part of via San Niccolò, a stretch of via Roma, where the ditch corresponded with the bed of the stream, and via Pisacane which ended in a constriction called "uttureddu", no longer existing. In the middle of the stretch on via Roma, there stood "Su Kuatteri" with solid foundations to contain the floods of the stream which, coming down from the north, flooded the entire area and caused damage to houses and people at the end of the 1800s.

Meaning of the name Selargius

The name Selargius has a very interesting etymology. If the Aragonese called the then "Ceraxus" by the name of "Bastida" which means fortress, there is a very deep reason in meaning and time, in fact, the term Ceraxus very widespread in Anatolia and the Balkans, is approached to "Karasu", "Karsu" which as demonstrated by the philologist Giovanni Semerano (philologist) are the Akkadian terms from which Latin "castrum" derives. In reality, Karasu and Cerasu are the same term pronounced differently by two opposed linguistic contexts that can be exemplified in Greek (Karasu) as well as in Logudorese "chelu" and "Cerasu" in Latin as in Campidanese "Celu". This linguistic example is evident in ancient Cerasu, the fortress of the ancient Amazon warriors, from which the Roman general Lucullus imported in 200 A.D.
