The History of Segni

Of course, I cannot ignore the ancient history of Segni. The first settlements date back to the Bronze Age, but the city developed during the Roman era. The city of Segni had a strategic position on the valley of the Sacco River. In the sixth century BC, Tarquin the Proud, the king of Rome, sent settlers and armed guards to protect the city.

The city-state of Segni was autonomous until 340 BC, when a treaty was stipulated with the Romans during the Latin War. Signia (the ancient name of Segni) was a thriving city that coined silver coins with the legend SEIC in the third century, from which the name of the city derives. The city was then elevated to a municipality in 89 BC and became famous for its loyalty to Rome.

During the Republican era and the imperial period, Signia was equipped with a forum and temples dedicated to various divinities. A monument to Emperor Caracalla was also erected, and numerous villas were built in the surrounding area.

In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Segni developed under the dominion of the Holy See and became part of the Roman Duchy and the "Patrimony of St. Peter". Here, the old thirteenth-century cathedral, the palace of the Community, and the Bishopric can be found.

Curiosities About Segni

But that's not all! During a visit to Segni, there are interesting facts to know. Segni is the birthplace of Pope Vitalian, pontiff from 657 to 672.

The historical charm of ancient Signia can still be seen in Piazza Santa Maria, the old thirteenth-century cathedral, the palace of the Community, and the Bishopric.
