Discovering Pescìna

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about a small hamlet in the municipality of Seggiano, Tuscany, called Pescìna. We are right in the heart of the Castagno woods, at the foot of Mount Amiata and halfway between the summit and the municipal capital. Here, at 747 meters above sea level, hides a true artistic and cultural gem, the church of San Lorenzo Martire.

Physical geography

Pescìna is a small inhabited center crossed by the Matrolla stream. This watercourse, which originates from the Poggio di Capo Vetra (a notable hill of the Amiata massif), flows into the Vetra stream, which in turn flows into the Vivo. It is not the size that characterizes Pescìna, but rather its location and the particular symbiosis with the surrounding nature. It is about 5 kilometers from Seggiano and just over 60 kilometers from Grosseto.

Pescina, an enchanted hamlet at the foot of Mount Amiata.

Monuments and places of interest

The church of San Lorenzo Martire is the most representative monument of Pescìna. It is a stone building with a bell tower on the right side, known for containing inside a painted panel with the Madonna and Child by Luca di Tommè, a Sienese painter of the XIV century. The panel has been destined for restoration and replaced with a copy, which can now be admired at the Seggiano documentation center. The interiors of the church, on the other hand, present eighteenth-century forms. Not far from the town is the Garden of Daniel Spoerri, a fascinating artistic park.

Society

The population of Pescìna has grown over the years. In 1961 there were only 56 inhabitants, in 2011 there were already 173. A healthy and balanced growth, which shows that the small inhabited center is giving its best.

Culture

In Pescìna, a typical sauce is produced, the scottiglia alla pescinaia, which has been recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry. The preparation of this dish requires a mix of veal, pork, chicken, turkey, rabbit and, according to taste, lamb. The sauce is served with stale bread during the visits of the farm laborers.

Anthropogenic geography

The hamlet of Pescìna extends quite linearly and has a main nucleus consisting of the capital Pescina and the nucleus of Coldelrosso. Then there are other hamlets located to the south, almost in semi-continuity with the capital. Most of the inhabitants live right here, but there are those who prefer to live immersed in nature, perhaps in one of the scattered houses among the surrounding woods.

In short, dear friends, if you are looking for a magical place where you can enjoy the beauty of Tuscany in all its essence, I recommend you to stop by Pescìna. Nature here will give you unforgettable moments and the works of art that you can admire will leave you breathless. Don't miss the opportunity!
