The Physical Geography of the Province of Macerata
The Province of Macerata has been the largest province in the Marche region since 2009. Its territory, which covers 2,775 km², is mainly hilly (67.7%) and has many mountainous areas (32.3%). Thanks to its geographical location on the eastern coast of the region, the Province of Macerata has direct access to the Adriatic Sea and is close to the Umbria region (Province of Perugia). Since 2004, this province is the only one in the Marche region to be bordered on three sides by other provinces in the same region, being adjacent to the Province of Ancona to the north, the Province of Ascoli Piceno to the southwest, and the Province of Fermo to the south.

The Province of Macerata is very active from an economic point of view: many specialized and small businesses are present in this territory. One of the most relevant sectors is that of footwear. In 2006, moreover, the Bank of the Province of Macerata was established.
Infrastructure and Transportation

The Via Lauretana was the most important road due to its geographical position: from Foligno, it entered the Marche region through the Altopiano di Colfiorito and headed towards the sanctuary of the Holy House and the Adriatic. Today, the province is served by a modern and rapid railway system, with many stations in various municipalities. Camerino is still downgraded, with its old and beautiful Castelraimondo-Camerino railway now dismantled and replaced by a bus service.
